My largest piece to date, the Queerest Tree sits somewhere between sculpture and installation. The trunk is constructed of knit raw wool, burlap, wire armature, and blind hope. The leaves were knit with raw yarn and painted with dye. Some of the things I thought about over the five months I spent knitting a tree: The commodification and politicization of gender and the human body; the diversity and wild glory of the same; that our greatest strength as queer folk can often be in our softness; how fascinatingly complex the shape of a human breast is to knit; and how excellent it is that the humble sock gusset wound up being crucial to that design.
